Every coconut coir fiber is covered in millions of microscopic negative charges — what soil scientists call its cation exchange capacity, or CEC. Those charged sites behave like tiny magnets, and in raw coco they come loaded with sodium and potassium left over from the husk's origins on the coast.

Here's the problem most growers never see coming. Calcium and magnesium are divalent cations — they carry twice the charge of sodium and potassium, so the coir grips them far more tightly. The moment you feed an unbuffered medium, the coco strips the calcium and magnesium straight out of your nutrient solution and releases its stored sodium into the root zone in exchange. The result is the classic coco cal-mag deficiency — locked-out feed, salt stress, and stalled growth — even when your reservoir reads perfect.
